A rocket was fired at a US military base in northeastern Syria.
The rocket was fired from Zumar, Iraq.
At least five rockets were fired from the Iraqi town of Zumar toward a U.S. military base in northeastern Syria on Sunday, two Iraqi security officials told Reuters.
The attack was the first on U.S. forces since early February, when Iran-backed groups in Iraq ceased attacks on U.S. troops.
The attack occurred on the same day that Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani returned from a visit to the United States and met with President Joe Biden at the White House.
Two security officials and a military official said the rocket launcher was strapped to the back of a small truck parked in the Syrian border town of Zumar.
Tensions remain high in the Middle East.
Tensions are at an extremely high level in the Middle East, as the Gaza war escalates and fighting between Israel and Iran becomes increasingly inevitable.
Earlier this month, Israel attacked the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, killing two Iranian generals, and Iran retaliated with a series of attacks on Israel on April 13. Most were deflected by the iron dome. Israel’s main ally, the United States, also helped bring down the Iranian drone strike.
A few days later, on April 19, Israel began airstrikes on major air bases and nuclear facilities in central Iran.
Both countries now appear to be downplaying attacks on each other in an effort to avoid wider conflict in the region.
