Shooting Incidents at Florida Beaches Result in Evacuations

Recently, five separate shootings took place at beaches in Florida, leading to the evacuation of visitors and leaving one police officer injured.

The incidents unfolded over the weekend in Daytona Beach. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as crowds fled along the sands and into the road while police attempted to restore order.

Kissy Delito, a bystander, recounted the situation: “People were dancing, twerking, and causing a ruckus. It felt insane. Even when I tried to help clear traffic, I was stuck—unable to move in any direction.”

The cause of this panic remains unclear. However, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office later stated that there were, in fact, no shootings occurring at the beach area during the weekend.

According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, a fight erupted on Friday night at the Sea Breeze Joint Bar nearby, resulting in a gunshot, though no injuries were reported from that incident. Within an hour, another shooting occurred outside a nearby gym, resulting in one death.

The police received multiple calls regarding shootings throughout Saturday. One such event reportedly took place outside the popular Krusin Cafe, just a short walk from the crowded beach.

Delito shared, “I overheard someone in the elevator saying it was their first time in Florida, and they were wondering if they should just leave.”

The South Daytona Beach Police Department confirmed that Officer Jake Fessenden was hospitalized after responding to a report of yet another shooting near Country Lane. Authorities indicated that the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle as officers responded to the area.

As the situation escalated, officers from various departments pursued the suspect on Interstate 95. During their attempt to apprehend him, the suspect crashed his vehicle and opened fire, hitting Officer Fessenden.

Another officer was able to intervene and subdue the suspect, identified later as Todd Anthony Martin, age 31. Both Fessenden and Martin were transported to a local hospital; fortunately, Fessenden is expected to recover after surgery, while Martin remains in critical condition.

Officials expressed relief at Fessenden’s stable condition, with Deputy Chief Tim Morgan stating, “He’s been hit in two serious areas, but he’s stable and doing okay.” Meanwhile, all victims from the weekend shootings are expected to survive.

Authorities are continuing to investigate if these shootings were connected to the spring break activity. As of now, the Daytona Beach Police have not provided any additional comments regarding the events.
