(UPI) — FKA Twigs is criticizing “double standards” after a Calvin Klein ad was banned in the UK.
The 36-year-old British singer and actress reacted on Wednesday after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled that her ad was “irresponsible” and “likely to cause serious offense”. .
In the ad in question, FKA Twigs is depicted with her denim shirt unbuttoned, exposing the right side of her body.
The ASA said: “The composition of the image directs the viewer's attention to the model's body rather than the advertised outfit” and “shows the model as a stereotypical sexual object”. .
“I don't see the 'stereotypical sex object' they labeled me,” FKA Twigs said in an Instagram post.
“I have a beautiful, strong woman of color whose incredible body has overcome unimaginable pain,” Starr said.
“When I consider other campaigns of this kind, past and present, I can’t help but feel there is a double standard here,” she added. “Let me be clear…I am proud of my physicality and the art I create in my own vessel is inspired by the empowered and inspired works of Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, and Grace Jones. I live up to the standards of women who have broken barriers to express their vitality. They embody a unique sensuality. Thank you ck, mert, and marcus for giving me the space to express myself the way I wanted. – I’m not going to change my story.”
Calvin Klein also defended the ad and its recent campaign with Kendall Jenner.
“The images are not vulgar, but instead depict two confident and empowered women who have chosen to identify with the Calvin Klein brand, and the ad contains a progressive and enlightening message. ”, the company said.
The controversy comes just days after Calvin Klein released an underwear campaign featuring actor Jeremy Allen White.
