Flau’jae Johnson and Angel Reese Reflect on Their Changing Relationship

Flau’jae Johnson and Angel Reese made headlines when they won the Women’s College Basketball National Championship together while playing for the LSU Tigers. However, it seems that a lot has changed since then.

Reese, who currently plays for the Chicago Sky in the WNBA, discussed her relationship with Johnson during an episode of her podcast, “Unapologetically Angel.” She mentioned that while they were once very close, that closeness isn’t quite there anymore. “We didn’t have any difficult feelings for each other,” she emphasized, but noted the shift in their connection.

Johnson weighed in on the matter during her recent appearance on the “Breakfast Club,” stating, “We’re not friends, but it’s more about the bond we had and the championships we won together. Sometimes, things happen. You hope that doesn’t happen, but… it does. And you just have to grow.”

Supporting each other still seems to be a priority. Johnson expressed her pride in Reese’s accomplishments, saying, “I support her with everything she does. She’s killing it in the WNBA.”

Both players acknowledged that external factors contributed to their current status. Johnson mentioned that there was a lot of media attention and “locker room stuff” that played a role in their distance. “It happens,” she said, indicating that this kind of thing isn’t uncommon.

The 2023-24 season added more layers to their dynamic, with Reese’s and Johnson’s mothers having some public disagreements on social media as LSU defended their national title. Reese’s mother noticeably criticized Johnson, leading to responses from Johnson’s mother as well.

There’s often an underlying complexity in sports relationships, isn’t there? As each of them forges ahead in their careers, it’s clear that while their past achievements bind them, their present circumstances are pulling them in different directions.
