Flau’jae Johnson and Angel Reese: A Changing Dynamic
Flau’jae Johnson and Angel Reese previously celebrated a triumph together as teammates on the LSU Tigers, having won the Women’s College Basketball National Championship. However, it seems that their relationship has evolved since that high point.
In September, Reese, now playing for the Chicago Sky in the WNBA, discussed her relationship with Johnson during an episode of her podcast, “Unapologetically Angel.” She mentioned that while they used to be quite close, things had changed, and there weren’t any lingering hard feelings, but their bond wasn’t as strong as it once was.
Johnson added her perspective during a recent appearance on the “Breakfast Club.” She stated, “We’re not friends, but it means the bond we had, the things we did together, the championships we won. Sometimes things happen, and you hope they don’t, but, well, they do. You just have to grow.” This sentiment hints at a certain wistfulness regarding their past camaraderie.
Reese is having a successful run in the WNBA, and Johnson expressed her support, saying she’s proud of Reese’s accomplishments. Yet, both players acknowledge that some tensions contributed to their current distance. Johnson noted that intense media scrutiny and locker room dynamics played a role in the shift of their relationship.
In fact, during the 2023-24 season, both players’ mothers were involved in social media disputes as LSU defended its national title. Reese’s mother, Angel Reese Webb, called out Johnson online, leading to a retort from Johnson’s mother, Kia Brooks. It raises the question of how much external factors can influence personal relationships, especially in high-pressure environments like sports.
As former teammates navigate their new paths, it’s clear that their history together remains a significant part of who they are, even as they face the realities of change and growth.
