Florida 12-year-old Bruhat Soma Wins 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee

Bruhat Soma, a 12-year-old from Florida, won the ’96 tournament.Number He won the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night, beating all seven other finalists and beating the last competitor in a spelling showdown for just the second time in the event’s history.

In the spelling contest, Burhat correctly spelled an astounding 29 words, while 12-year-old Faizan Zaki from Texas correctly spelled 20 words.

According to spelling bee rules, if the competition exceeds a certain time limit and one or more contestants remain, a spelling-off will take place.

“When it was first announced there was going to be a spell-off, my heart was racing, but then I realized, ‘Maybe I have a chance to win,'” Bruhat said. CNN‘s John Berman and Kate Bolduin appeared on Friday Morning. “And I did.”

The winning word that gave Blue Hat the title was “Abseil.”

He called those 90 seconds “kind of exhilarating.”

“I’m really excited. Winning has been my goal this past year and I’ve been practicing so hard,” Bruhat said onstage, clutching the trophy. “I can’t even put it into words. I’m still shaking.”

Many in the audience recognised Bruhat’s technique of “typing” words onstage by pantomiming pressing the correct key for each letter.

More than 240 spellers participated in this year’s spelling bee, held this week, with eight advancing to the finals on Thursday night.

Dr. Jill Biden shared a video message of support for the spellers before the competition began.

“The President and I can’t wait to cheer you on,” she said in the message.

In addition to Burhat and Zaki, the other finalists were YY Liang (12) from New York, Aditi Muthukumar (13) from Colorado, Shrey Parikh (12) from California, Ananya Rao Prassana (13) from North Carolina, Rishabh Saha (14) from California and Kirsten Tiffany Santos (13) from Texas.

Bruhat competed in the 2022 spelling bee and tied for first place with 163 points.rd In 2023, they will be tied for 74th place.Number The winner took first place, according to the contest’s website.

This year’s spelling contestants, all under the age of 15, came from schools in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Department of Defense schools in Europe.

The last time the spelling-off was held was in 2022, with winner Harini Logan spelling 22 words in one and a half minutes to claim the title of Queen Bee.

The winner will receive a cash prize of $50,000, an official trophy, a Merriam-Webster reference book, and an Encyclopedia Britannica reference book, and all finalists will also receive a cash prize.
