Florida Teen Charged in Fatal Shooting
A 15-year-old from Florida is facing adult charges after allegedly shooting a 16-year-old in a school-related incident last month.
Jacori Antonio Redding has been charged with manslaughter using a deadly weapon, and, interestingly, he wasn’t granted bail as per the arrest affidavit released on Friday. Additionally, he faces charges for possessing a firearm on school property, for which he received a $10,000 bond, and being a minor in possession of a firearm, carrying a $1,000 bond.
In a rather shocking statement, a judge ordered Redding to be transferred from the Juvenile Justice Department to the Orange County Jail, where he was booked on Friday.
Authorities indicate that Redding’s adult charges have been filed by the Orange County State’s Attorney’s Office as well.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a confrontation in a school hallway on October 9. Witnesses indicate Redding and 16-year-old Pinien Dalmasy encountered each other earlier that day at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando.
It was reported that Dalmasy asked Redding to apologize after a bump-in, but Redding refused. Thus, the two students decided to settle their differences with a fight after school at Vogt Mellon Park on West Oak Ridge Road.
Law enforcement received reports of a shooting at the park’s basketball court and found Dalmasy, who had sustained two gunshot wounds.
According to court documents, 9th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Monique H. Worrell alleged that Redding utilized a firearm to kill Dalmasy.
After the shooting, Redding fled back to the high school, where a deputy, in collaboration with school officials, managed to secure him in the school cafeteria. A weapon was later discovered in his bag, leading to his arrest on charges of manslaughter and possession of a firearm on school grounds.
On October 10, the day following the incident, a video report was released.
It’s worth noting that this incident is not Redding’s first time facing legal troubles; he has previously been tried for grand theft auto.
Expressing their condolences, Sheriff John Mina remarked, “My heart breaks for Mr. Pinien’s family as they grieve an unimaginable loss,” while also emphasizing how absurd it is that a minor hallway incident escalated to such a tragic outcome.
Detectives stated they are aware of witnesses and potentially useful video evidence from the scene and are encouraging others with information to reach out to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Redding has pleaded not guilty, and an arraignment is set for November 10. His next hearing is on November 12, according to court information.
