Florida Attorney General Proposes Immigrant Detention Center
Florida Attorney General James Usmieyer has put forward a proposal for a new detention center aimed at undocumented immigrants, located at an abandoned airport situated in the heart of the Everglades. “This is an old, practically abandoned airport facility in the middle of the Everglades,” he mentioned in an interview recently.
In his comments, Usmieyer highlighted Florida’s role in immigration enforcement, emphasizing support for the Trump administration and efforts by ICE to detain and deport individuals found to be in the country illegally.
He referred to the proposed site humorously as “Crocodile Alcatraz,” noting its isolation. “If anyone tries to leave, there’s no real place to hide—only alligators and pythons are waiting,” he stated.
Usmieyer remarked that the facility could be operational within 30 to 60 days if it receives the necessary approvals. If this project moves forward, it would become the largest immigration detention site in Florida.
This proposal surfaces amid increasing scrutiny on immigration practices nationwide. The Trump administration has been noted for historic strides in US border security. Recently, Florida saw a significant deportation effort where around 800 individuals, including MS-13 gang members and convicted felons, were apprehended in a four-day operation.
The state has also implemented a law requiring local and state law enforcement to assist ICE operations. “Crocodile Alcatraz. We’re ready,” Usmieyer affirmed in his discussion about the initiative.
