Florida Attorney General Proposes Law to Protect Children

Florida Attorney General James Usmier announced on Thursday a new proposal aimed at preventing sexual predators and abusers from using surrogacy, adoption, or other means to arrange for the care of children.

In a video statement, Uthmeier expressed concern about protecting children from individuals who might try to form parental connections. He highlighted alarming cases of predators exploiting legal loopholes to access children. For instance, he mentioned a recent situation involving a registered sex offender from Pennsylvania, who had a child through surrogacy despite prior convictions for child sexual abuse.

In his announcement, Uthmeier stated:

“My goal is to make Florida the safest place to raise a family. My wife Jean and I are blessed with three small children, and we understand the immense responsibility of nurturing good citizens. Many couples face difficulties in having children and turn to technologies like surrogacy to explore family-building options.”

He continued, noting the risks associated with surrogacy, particularly after learning about situations in Pennsylvania. “It’s concerning to see registered sex offenders becoming parents through these means,” he remarked.

Uthmeier asserted, “This cannot and will not be allowed in Florida. Today, I am proposing measures to protect our children from those who would exploit parental relationships. I want to collaborate with Congress to ensure that registered sex offenders cannot obtain children through surrogacy, adoption, or foster care.”

He further emphasized that the proposed law would also include provisions against individuals who have committed animal abuse, arguing that such behavior raises serious concerns about their ability to parent effectively. “If someone is capable of abusing animals, they have no business becoming a new parent,” he stated. “The safety of our children must come first.”

Uthmeier concluded by expressing his eagerness to work with Congress to enhance the protection of children and maintain a safe environment.
