Florida construction crane segment collapses onto downtown bridge killing 1 worker, hospitalizing 2 others

One construction worker was killed and two others injured when part of a construction crane fell on a busy bridge in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Thursday afternoon.

According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, first responders were called to the Southeast Third Street Bridge over the New River around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

“A large portion of the operation fell from a height during the ‘crane stepping’ operation,” officials said in a Facebook post.

One construction worker was killed, Fort Lauderdale Fire Department Chief Steven Golan said at an evening news conference.

Their identities have not been made public.

The man and woman suffered minor injuries and were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, Fire Rescue said.

The third injured person was not taken to a hospital.

Golan said the platform holding the equipment failed and items fell from the platform onto the bridge.

Images and footage from the scene showed a large square section of a blue crane on top of a black car.

The car’s windshield appeared to have been cracked by a large section of the crane.

Behind one of the cars, the road appeared to be damaged where debris from the crane had fallen.

The crane appeared to be working on a new construction building in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The city said the bridge was closed to traffic in both directions after a crane collapsed and created a hole.
