A Florida couple was arrested Tuesday after police found their three children in their care living in “deplorable” conditions at their home, authorities said.
Officers initially responded to a call about an argument between neighbors at the home of Michelle Sophia, 38, in Bunnell. Sophia lived with her live-in boyfriend, Willie London, 41, and their three children, aged 11 and 12. 17, according to the Bunnell Police Department.
When officers arrived, priorities shifted by establishing the living conditions inside the home.
Officers described what they found inside as “deplorable” and said they observed “layers of dirt, piles of soiled clothing, layers of feces and piles of rat droppings throughout the residence.”

Police said two broken refrigerators in the house contained moldy food and insects, and a third, working refrigerator, contained only seasonings. Dirty dishes were piled up on the kitchen counter and stove, and live cockroaches were flying between the counters and dishes.

Authorities said some bedrooms did not have mattresses or running water, and what appeared to be human waste covered in active flies filled the bathroom toilets. However, the house had electricity.

Sophia reportedly told investigators, “I didn't think it was that bad.''
The children were removed from the home and placed in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Family Services.

Sophia and London were each arrested and charged with three counts of child neglect. They were being held without bond at the Flagler County Inmate Facility.
