“Stop Woke” Called a “Racist Dog Whistle” by DSA Member

Angie Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and a contender for a Senate seat in Florida, recently characterized the “stop woke” agenda as a “racist dog whistle” in a 2023 interview. She took aim at Governor Ron DeSantis, who promotes the idea that Florida is where the so-called leftist “woke” agenda goes to die.

“Stop woke… it’s a term that undermines black people,” Nixon stated, claiming that Republicans’ real intention is to harm black individuals while disguising it as a fight against wokeness.

She went further, saying, “If Florida is where the woke, or black individuals, go to die, what happened last Saturday serves as proof.” This sentiment reflects a pattern of exaggerated accusations against Republicans; she has previously remarked that they are “literally trying to kill us,” which makes bipartisan cooperation impossible.

In a video clip shared by RNC Research, Nixon expressed skepticism about collaboration with Republicans by stating, “They are not attempting to work with us; they’re actually trying to harm us, and it’s happening visibly.”

Nixon, who holds a position in the state House, has even attributed a nosebleed to the “trauma” of her interactions with Republican legislators. Additionally, she has often cited concepts from Marxist figures like Assata Shakur, arguing against the GOP’s stance on the “woke” narrative in Florida. She believes they are primarily motivated by fear of minorities gaining power.

As previously reported, she has criticized Governor DeSantis and Republican policies that limit education related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), contending that these attacks on “woke” ideologies serve to weaken minority influence, which she asserts is on the rise.

Nixon continued her argument by suggesting that Republicans seek to suppress awareness and activism among marginalized groups, whom she believes will gain political power if they unite. “They’re scared—scared of what this growing majority will do to the status quo they’ve maintained for so long,” she noted, expressing her belief that this new coalition consists of black individuals, Latinos, and other historically marginalized populations.

Nixon’s criticisms are juxtaposed against the backdrop of Governor DeSantis’s governance, which she claims has involved protecting children from drag shows, preserving a conventional narrative in education, and limiting exposure to what she describes as inappropriate content. All of these factors, according to her, fall under the broad concept of “woke” that she supports.
