Florida Elementary School Students Charged Over Alleged Handgun Transaction, Police Say

Two 10-year-old students in Florida were arrested and charged after a report that elementary school students were exchanging handguns, according to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office.

The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office discovered that two students made a deal in early February to exchange firearms for $300. The gun belonged to the student’s deceased father, who sold guns.

The handgun was found inside a backpack under a storage shed in the student’s backyard, the report said. Hendry County Sheriff’s Office. In addition to the firearm, investigators also found a bag containing 74 grams of marijuana.

Both elementary school students were arrested and charged with the exchange.

The student who sold the handgun was charged with selling or purchasing a firearm by a minor, illegal possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm on school grounds, and possession of marijuana over 20 grams. He was charged with selling. The mother of the student who sold the gun is a deputy with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office. She is on leave pending an administrative investigation.

The two students are currently in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
