Florida eliminates three gymnasts as Long Island native criticizes 'false stories'

A collegiate gymnast is speaking out after she and three teammates were dismissed from the University of Florida Gators gymnastics team.

Skylar Draser, a senior from South Huntington, along with juniors Ly Bui and Lily Bruce, were removed from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) program this week. The head coach, Jenny Rowland, confirmed their departures but didn’t elaborate on the reasons.

In a statement to local media, Rowland expressed well wishes for the athletes and emphasized the team’s commitment to accountability, respect, and culture.

Nonetheless, Draser took to social media to share her feelings about the “hurtful” and “disturbing false narratives” surrounding her exit from the team.

“I never thought that leaving Florida during my last year would mean seeing my name associated with so many hurtful stories,” Draser mentioned. “It’s disheartening to watch others fabricate tales about things they know nothing about. While I can’t control what people say or believe, I know my truth, my character, and the effort I put into this program. I am incredibly grateful for my family’s support during this tough time.”

Throughout the 2026 season, Draser was a key player for the Gators, regularly competing on vault and beam, achieving a personal best score of 9.95 during her junior year. She was recognized on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in both 2025 and 2026, made the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll in 2024, and earned the title of WCGA Scholastic All-American in 2026.

Although Draser did not clarify the reasons behind her removal, she mentioned that she plans to complete her studies at the University of Florida, graduating in December before entering the transfer portal. She still has this season and a fifth year of eligibility available.

“As challenging as this situation has been, I won’t let it define me,” her statement continued. “I’ll learn from it, take responsibility, and emerge stronger. I’ve discovered how to keep persevering in tough times, find strength amid uncertainty, and trust myself even when the future looks so different from what I imagined. This sport has influenced me in many ways, but it does not determine my value or identity. I know who I am, what I deserve, and I take pride in the person I’ve become.”

She concluded by reflecting on her departure: “Although this chapter didn’t close the way I had dreamed, I’m leaving Florida with unexpected lessons, newfound strength, and a belief that everything happens for a reason. I’ll be forever thankful for the experiences, lessons, and relationships Florida has given me. I’m wrapping this chapter with gratitude and stepping into the next one with an open heart, faith, and excitement for what lies ahead.”
