Representative Randy Fine (R-Fla.) has put forth a proposal for a Snap Census, aimed solely at counting American citizens.
The legislation, dubbed the “Counting Law,” would direct the Secretary of Commerce to initiate a census that includes only U.S. citizens in its tally.
This move was prompted by ongoing rezoning disputes seen nationwide.
In Texas, Republicans are working to redraw congressional maps, with the intention of securing additional seats for their party. They argue that current congressional allocations, influenced by broader census counts that include non-citizens, favor Democrats.
This initiative coincides with comments from Trump, who mentioned directing the Commerce Department to initiate a new census that excludes undocumented immigrants.
“The voting rights in America are diluted by illegal aliens, which skew the population counts in blue states,” Fine stated. “Both the President and I recognize this issue. That’s why I introduced the Counting Law to launch this Snap Census for Americans. Considering significant deportations and economic refugees exiting blue states, the validity of the 2020 census has come into question.”
A similar bill has garnered Republican support in the past.
Last year, a measure passed the House along party lines, proposing that only citizens be counted when determining congressional representation and electoral votes.
A representative from the Commerce Department had previously told The Hill that the Census Bureau employs modern technology to ensure accurate data collection, aiming to represent the number of legal residents in the country accurately.
