Florida High School Coach Charged with Child Abuse
A Florida high school football coach has been charged with child abuse following allegations that he engaged in physical confrontation with multiple students.
Jameel Clark, 29, a former assistant coach at Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, was arrested on Monday. He faces four counts of child abuse without major physical harm, as reported by local authorities.
The incident reportedly occurred in the weight room during practice, triggered by an argument over social media posts. It’s said that Clark became upset after one student made a negative comment online, which led to a heated exchange.
According to the arrest report, Clark used derogatory language toward a student before striking him. Other students then surrounded him, which escalated into a chaotic scene where he allegedly threw punches at several of them.
One student recounted that once Clark struck the first blow, a brawl ensued. Reports indicate that Clark not only hit three students but also damaged a wall mirror in the process.
Interestingly, the report mentioned that when authorities arrived at the scene, they found Clark sitting in a dark locker room, seemingly unbothered by the unfolding situation.
Clark, who is described as 6’7″ tall and weighing 400 pounds, claims he acted out of self-defense. However, prosecutors argue that his size poses a danger to students, which raises concerns about the incident’s nature.
Broward County Public Schools has responded by stating that the coach has been reassigned while they review the incident, underscoring the importance of student safety.
The principal of the school also informed parents that Clark would no longer serve as an assistant coach.
After appearing in court, Clark was held on a $30,000 bond. Once posted, he was released under house arrest and prohibited from contacting the victims.
In another twist, prosecutors revealed that Clark had faced similar allegations earlier this year involving students at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, where he worked as a campus monitor. Footage from a bathroom incident, which had gone unreported at the time, has now surfaced.
Community members have voiced their outrage over Clark’s behavior, with one parent calling it “outrageous.” Even students seem to have anticipated the charges, suggesting that this wasn’t entirely surprising given his history.
