Controversial Survey Assigned to Florida High School Students
A high school student in Florida recently participated in a local university course that included a sexuality-themed survey. This survey posed questions about sexual orientation and suggested that heterosexual individuals may be overpopulating the planet.
The course, called “Preparing Students for Success,” aimed to help high schoolers set academic goals and develop strategies for succeeding in college. It was offered through Miami-Dade College.
Students faced a range of inquiries, such as, “Do you think it caused your heterosexuality?” and “Is being straight just a phase you might grow out of?” They were also asked, “Given the threat of overpopulation, can humanity survive if everyone were straight?”
Parental Concerns Raised
A concerned mother of one of the students expressed her outrage, saying, “If anyone approached my son with these questions, I would call the police. It’s absolutely unacceptable to discuss such topics with teenagers.” She described the situation as “sick,” questioning the appropriateness of addressing sexuality with a 15-year-old.
Fox News Digital reached out to the university for comments regarding the survey.
According to the course outline, the classes aim to impart skills related to university success, goal-setting, learning assessments, and general research abilities within a diverse set of learning perspectives.
Survey Background
The questions in this survey were derived from the textbook “Power: Strategies for University and Life Success,” authored by Robert Feldman of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The survey itself comes from Martin Rochlin, who created the “Heterosexual Survey” in 1972.
Following the uproar, the university announced that the assignment would be discontinued after a review.
“Miami-Dade College is dedicated to offering a safe and respectful learning environment for all students,” the institution commented. “After assessing the concerns about classroom activities, we will no longer utilize this assignment.” The college emphasized its commitment to maintaining high academic standards for its educators.
The mother also mentioned that another survey focused on diversity, asking students to gather statistics about racial demographics in their schools. One question encouraged them to evaluate their perceptions, asking, “Wouldn’t it surprise you if a professional football player were gay?”
