Florida Highway Patrol’s Immigration Enforcement Efforts
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has announced the arrest of 6,200 illegal immigrants this year in collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
This initiative aligns with actions taken by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who called for state and local law enforcement to “double down” on deportation efforts earlier this year, instructing FHP to join forces with ICE.
DeSantis criticized the Biden administration, suggesting that domestic enforcement had weakened, implying a need for state support of Trump’s policy initiatives. He believes that this partnership will enhance enforcement capabilities.
The governor has been notable in his commitment to advancing immigration policies, particularly as Trump gears up for a potential second presidential term.
Recent statistics on FHP’s apprehensions underscore DeSantis’s commitment, which he acknowledged in a recent social media update.
“Florida is leading the way. We are showing what can be done when we work together with the federal government on an issue that matters so much to so many people,” he stated.
Florida actively participates in the ICE 287(g) program, which facilitates direct cooperation between ICE and local law enforcement for immigration actions. There are 287 agencies involved in the state.
ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheehan commended Florida’s initiatives, asserting that the collaboration demonstrates a commitment to public safety and a clear message regarding the consequences for criminal aliens.
Mark Glass, Director of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, emphasized the importance of such partnerships in maintaining public safety, highlighting their role as a potential model for other states in the mission to remove dangerous illegal immigrants from communities.
