Authorities say they were able to find a missing 16-year-old girl in Ohio after receiving unexpected help from the popular online video game “World of Warcraft.” According to reports, the girl was found at a home in Florida. CNN.
The FBI apparently contacted the Marion County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday to request assistance in searching for the missing girl. The Marion County Sheriff's Office posted the following on Facebook regarding the incident: write Thomas Ebersole, 31, was arrested on charges of “traveling to meet a minor for the purpose of sexual activity, interfering with the custody of a child, and protecting an unmarried minor.”
Investigators discovered a teen's account for World of Warcraft, one of the largest online multiplayer role-playing games, was active at a residence in Dunnellon, Florida. The game is unique in that potentially millions of people can inhabit the same virtual space, develop characters, and interact with each other.
Authorities eventually discovered that the residence where the boy's gaming account was active belonged to Eversole, and that his own World of Warcraft account was also active at the time.
CNN reported that Ebersole initially denied knowing the girl, but a Facebook post said he had traveled to Ohio to meet the girl and bring her back to Florida. He eventually admitted it.
“Ebersole also stated that he had a romantic relationship with the boy and that he was hiding her in his home with plans to make her his wife,” the Facebook post continued.
“Detective Ebersole provided Detective Osedo with Discord messages further detailing his plan to meet the victim in Ohio and engage in sexual activity, knowing that he was committing a crime.”
Ebersole was ultimately taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of traveling across state lines with the intent to meet and engage in sexual activity with a minor, interfering with child custody and custody of an unmarried minor. Ta.
The 31-year-old was then taken to the Marion County Jail, where he is currently being held without bail.
He is scheduled to appear in court on February 6, but there is no information on whether Ebersole has retained legal representation in the case.
It is not clear what punishment Ebersole could face if found guilty.
