Florida Execution of Convicted Murderer
On Tuesday, Florida executed a five-time convicted murderer, marking the 26th execution in the U.S. this year. Michael Bernard Bell, 54, was pronounced dead at 6:25 PM after receiving a lethal injection at the Florida State Jail, according to a spokesperson for Governor Ron DeSantis.
Interestingly, Bell, who was sentenced to death for two murders committed in 1993, expressed gratitude as his final words. “Thank you for not spending the rest of my life in prison,” he said, which was quite unexpected given the gravity of his crimes.
On the morning of his execution, Bell started his day early at 6:30 AM, enjoying a final meal that included a classic breakfast of an omelette, bacon, home fries, and orange juice. During his last hours, he only met with a spiritual advisor.
Despite his apparent acceptance, Bell’s lawyers attempted to halt the execution by appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ultimately rejected the request. The court backed its decision with a substantial 54-page opinion.
Bell had been convicted in 1995 for the murders of Jimmy West and Tamecca Smith. In December 1993, he pursued West, believing he was targeting the man who had killed his brother. Armed with an AK-47, Bell fired shots outside a bar, leading to West’s death and Smith’s serious injury, which later resulted in her passing as well. A third passenger in the car managed to escape without harm.
His criminal record includes three additional murders. In 1989, he shot a woman and her infant son. Furthermore, just four months before the bar incident, he killed his mother’s boyfriend.
This year, Florida has surpassed other states, executing more individuals than any other, with Bell being the eighth executed in the state in a significant increase from last year, which had just one execution. On July 31, Edward J. Zakrutsevsky II is scheduled to be the state’s ninth execution. He was convicted in 1996 of murdering his family, including two young children, during a violent episode related to a divorce.
