A man from Florida, currently on probation, faces first-degree murder charges after he allegedly stalked, killed, and dismembered his stepfather, who was 71 years old.
The authorities grew concerned about Jose Proano after they made disturbing discoveries inside three suitcases just shy of midnight on August 4th. The packages were found alongside a road in Orlando, near where Proano’s mother and stepfather lived.
About a day earlier, relatives of Jorge Vazquez-Escutia had reached out for help because they found his belongings—cell phone, wallet, and keys—at his residence, and there were signs of blood on a fence outside, according to a court affidavit. A family member mentioned that his car was parked in the driveway, the doors unlocked, which was unlike him. They hadn’t seen him for three days, prompting concern.
Additionally, friends of Proano communicated alarming claims to the family, revealing that Proano had allegedly confessed to killing his stepfather, as indicated in court records. The sheriff’s office subsequently urged the public for assistance in locating Vazquez-Escutia, expressing worry for his safety, as he was reported to be suffering from memory loss.
A sequence of unsettling events recorded by nearby security cameras further captured attention. On August 2, the day after Vazquez-Escutia was last seen, video footage showcased a man in a black shirt hopping over the fence of his home. Later, the same individual was spotted at the back of the house, removing a suitcase and seemingly placing what looked like a human arm inside it, according to court documents.
By 4:28 p.m., the surveillance revealed a man dressed in black walking down a driveway while carrying three packages. Detectives noted that the suitcase appeared quite heavy, as indicated by how the man’s left arm flexed while he dragged it.
As the investigation progressed, Proano, 44, was contacted by investigators for a meeting. His phone records showed that he had been present at the scene around the same time the man appeared on the video. This helped them construct a timeline of events.
A few days prior, Proano had traveled from Northport, which is around 250 miles away. His ex-wife informed authorities that his behavior had been erratic and he had made threats towards her. Proano agreed to speak with investigators, telling them that he had a poor relationship with his stepfather, whom he believed restricted his access to his mother. He also disclosed that he suffers from schizophrenia and hears voices, leading him to worry about his family’s safety.
This concern prompted Proano to call 911 multiple times, asking for someone to check on his mother’s wellbeing. Officers followed up, but the situation took a dark turn.
Hours after Vazquez-Escutia was reported missing, deputies searched the vicinity of his home, suspecting that key evidence might be hidden in the suitcases. Approaching midnight on August 4, they uncovered a peculiar odor behind a nearby brick wall, which led to the shocking discovery of a human head—identified as belonging to Vazquez-Escutia.
Two more packages were found along the road about 140 feet away, one of which had a luggage tag with Proano’s mother’s name on it. Opening the suitcases revealed not only a tarp but also dismembered body parts of the missing man. Proano initially denied being the person in the video yet later admitted that his cell phone was present at the scene.
Defensive injuries such as scratches on Proano’s hands and arms, along with a notable gash on his cheek, were documented by investigators. In 2022, he had been indicted on charges stemming from an armed robbery and had accepted a plea deal that significantly reduced his sentence while placing him on probation until 2027. These new charges breach the terms of his probation, reviving the case.
Currently, Proano is being held without bail in Orange County, and his public defender has refrained from commenting on the situation, stating that their client has not permitted them to discuss his case.
