Off-Duty Police Superintendent Charged in Bahamas Murder

An off-duty police superintendent in the Bahamas is facing murder charges following the death of an American worker, as per reports.

The victim, identified as 31-year-old Cody Castillo from Crawfordville, Florida, was shot in Nassau on March 21 after an incident outside Da Plantation Bar & Grill. The shooting involved Bernille Pinder, a 51-year-old superintendent with the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), who was not on duty at the time.

The RBPF announced that a senior officer was charged with murder and had been formally arraigned. National Security Minister Wayne Munro stated that a criminal investigation was promptly initiated.

Minister Munro mentioned, “It’s understood that police arrived at the scene, collected CCTV footage, and began investigating. If there’s sufficient evidence for criminal charges, they will be filed. If it turns out that charges should be filed, an autopsy will follow.” There’s a sort of procedural urgency to these statements that feels, well, expected.

Major Cruise Lines Affected

A U.S. State Department representative confirmed an American’s death, stating, “We’re closely monitoring the investigation by local authorities.” They added, “The safety and security of Americans is our highest priority,” while insisting on respecting the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

Additionally, a spokesperson from the U.S. Embassy in Nassau informed that they were observing the situation closely. They expressed concern over disturbing reports that indicated police might have pursued the unarmed victim to his vehicle before shooting him. There’s a call for the Bahamian government to ensure justice is served swiftly.

Currently, there are no more detailed official updates regarding the identities of those involved or the exact events leading up to the shooting. Fox News Digital has sought further information from the RBPF.

Reportedly, Castle, who worked as a lineman for Pike Electric, was in the Bahamas for business. A GoFundMe has been established, shedding light on Castillo’s circumstances. He recently married Mikayla, and they’re expecting their first child in August. It’s really heartbreaking, I think. Life was supposed to be looking up for them.

The fundraiser stated, “Cody was working to support his family when his life was cut short by senseless violence.” There’s something about that statement that almost weighs heavily, you know?
