Florida man goes to beach searching for sea turtle nests, finds over $1 million in cocaine instead

A Florida man recently went looking for sea turtle nests but ended up finding over 70 pounds of cocaine on the shore.

An unnamed man went looking for sea turtle nests on Amelia Island Beach near Jacksonville on the Atlantic coast when he found a 71.4-pound block of cocaine that police believe has a street value of about $4.8 million.

The cocaine blocks were reportedly washed up on the shore while the man was searching for sea turtle nests. The blocks were reportedly wrapped in plastic with a picture of an eagle on top.

Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper Said“It’s very unusual here in Nassau County. Years ago we had some chunks of marijuana wash up on the beach, but as far as I know it’s definitely unusual for something like this to wash up.”

Mr Leeper added: “This significant seizure demonstrates the importance of community vigilance and working with police. We’d like to thank the alert resident who reported this find. Our teams are working diligently to trace the source of these drugs and keep our communities safe.”

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office statement“The drugs have a street value of approximately $4.8 million. The drugs, weighing 71.4 pounds, were discovered by an alert citizen who noticed a suspicious object washed up on shore.”

The department noted that the investigation is still ongoing.

In May 2021, wildlife managers Stumbled He was found with approximately $1.2 million worth of cocaine while conducting a sea turtle nesting survey on the beach at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

“While we were waiting for them to arrive, we drove a little further and noticed another package, then another one, at which point we called SFS back and suggested they bring a UTV because we counted the packages and there were at least 18,” said Angie Chambers, wildlife manager with 45th Civil Engineer Company.

Flight Sergeant Joseph Parker added, “After securing the scene and recovering the contraband, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office narcotics investigators tested one of the packages on-site and confirmed it was cocaine. All 24 packages were then logged and placed into evidence bags.”
