A Florida man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a woman’s car and then reporting it stolen, police said.
Marquis Nance, 32, of Ocala, is currently facing multiple charges, according to jail records., The charges include grand theft of a motor vehicle after a recent arrest.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in central Florida, a woman called authorities and said Nance “had stolen her car and was calling to report the theft.”
“He then exited the car at Winn-Dixie.” [supermarket] Located on Marion Oaks Boulevard. Additionally, when we contacted Nance, he denied stealing the car,” the statement said. “However, surveillance footage showed Nance exiting the victim’s car at the Winn-Dixie. It was visible,” he added.
The body of a 23-year-old Florida swimmer was found offshore after disappearing into the water.

Police said Nance was later taken into custody and found to be in possession of ammunition.

Marion Police Lt. Paul Bloom joked in a video released by police that Nance was “kind” to tell the woman he stole her car.

Court records show Nance has been charged separately with felonies dating back to early 2023, including imprisonment, domestic assault and assault on a law enforcement officer.
In a probable cause affidavit in the case, authorities allege that a woman Nance was dating claimed that Nance held her against her will, grabbed her and forced her into the hotel room they shared. He said they responded to a call of a domestic disturbance. . Once Nance was arrested, police said she then began “pushing” the deputy.

Nance was previously charged with domestic assault by strangulation following an incident in June 2020. Nance pleaded not guilty in the case, but prosecutors dropped the charges because the victim could not be found.
