Florida man arrested on island after allegedly strangling girlfriend and hitting her with bottle

A Florida man has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly hit his girlfriend over the head with a vodka bottle, then choked her before fleeing the scene.
The Port Orange Police Department said on social media that a bystander who saw Joyner attempt to choke the woman using his hands and a rope, then chase her, was able to temporarily pin him to the ground “to prevent him from causing further harm.”
Police said Jeriel Joyner escaped and swam to an island along the Intracoastal Waterway on the state’s Atlantic coast on June 23.

Joyner was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic assault by strangulation and felony assault.
