Jacksonville Mayor Responds to Viral Traffic Stop Incident
A police officer was filmed striking a male driver, sparking widespread outrage. Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the event and emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation.
Mayor Deegan expressed awareness of the public’s frustration regarding the incident, noting, “I understand my anxiety. I get the upset. I think at the end of the day, we should see where this leads. Let’s hope for a positive resolution.”
In the video, which circulated recently but was filmed in February, William McNeill Jr. can be seen as officers break the windows of his car and demand he exit. An officer shouts, “Leave the vehicle now!” before striking McNeill. The footage began with McNeill discussing why he was pulled over, related to his headlights being off in poor weather conditions. Bodycam video later revealed that McNeill had refused to provide his driver’s license or insurance details.
Ultimately, officers broke the windows and discovered a large knife in McNeill’s car. Mayor Deegan mentioned that some people were disappointed with her level of anger about the situation.
“I’m a practical thinker, and while I don’t want to downplay what happened, we need to get through the investigation process first,” she stated, adding that Jacksonville operates with an independent government structure, where she manages the city and the sheriff oversees police matters.
She commended Sheriff TK Waters for releasing bodycam footage to ensure transparency but refrained from making any definitive statements at this point. “I think we should all be a little patient,” she added.
Waters had mentioned that the State Attorney’s Office found no criminal violations among the officers involved, despite the ongoing administrative reviews of their actions. Following the video’s release, attorneys Ben Crump and Harry Daniels announced they are representing McNeill, citing racial dynamics given that McNeill is Black and the officer is White.
Crump remarked, “What happened to William McNeill Jr. raises significant concerns about the fundamental rights that Black Americans face during encounters with law enforcement. William was calm and compliant but was met with aggression instead of clarity.” He called for full accountability and for all relevant videos from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to be released to ensure transparency.
