Florida repeat offender filmed driving in reverse on the highway

A man with a history of driving offenses was recently filmed going the wrong way on a busy road in Florida, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. On March 13, numerous callers reported seeing a silver sedan traveling incorrectly on SR 100, which is a major highway in the region.

In the footage, the car can be seen reversing down the median of this divided road. The local authorities tracked the vehicle to a Panda Express parking lot. When the driver turned the car around to face the right direction, deputies were able to pull him over near SR 100 and Airport Road.

The driver, identified as 47-year-old William Murphy III from Palm Coast, asserted that he was facing mechanical troubles and felt that reversing was the best solution to reach AutoZone. Interestingly, authorities noted that his alleged mechanical issues seemed to disappear once they arrived on the scene.

Body camera videos from police show Murphy struggling to justify his actions. He claimed, “I didn’t think I was that bad… you know what I’m saying… I didn’t even swerve or drive fast.” To which the deputy firmly replied, “You were driving the wrong way on the road!”

Murphy was arrested on charges related to habitual driving, given that his license had been suspended or revoked, and reports indicate he has over ten prior convictions. After being taken to the Perry Hall Sheriff Detention Center, he was released later on a $1,000 bond.
