Florida Teacher Jailed for Disturbing Classroom Incident
A middle school teacher in Florida has been arrested after a shocking incident involving a black baby doll intended to “get attention” from her students.
Karen Savage, who teaches art at Barrington Middle School in Lithia, was observed wrapping a black wire around the doll’s neck during class on Monday, then tossing it onto a flat-screen television.
At 63 years old, Savage left the doll hanging in front of her astonished students, prompting reactions of disbelief from those present.
One student, Noah Carter, captured the incident on video as it unfolded. He mentioned that Savage hung the doll when “no one was paying attention,” and described how classmates quickly pointed out that her actions were inappropriate and racist.
“Everyone started telling her it was wrong,” Carter, 14, said. “She brushed it off, claiming it was just a joke before putting the doll down.”
He added that Savage followed him as he attempted to report the incident, making him feel uneasy about the whole situation.
Carter expressed his hope that Savage would never teach again, saying someone who behaves that way shouldn’t be in a classroom.
His mother, Nina Williams, shared the video on social media, and it has since gone viral.
In her post, Williams criticized Savage for her actions, stating, “This is not a classroom management tool. This is hate and trauma being weaponized in front of children in a place that is supposed to be safe.”
Initially, Savage was taken out of the classroom while an internal investigation was conducted, but the Hillsborough County School District confirmed on Wednesday that she has been fired.
Williams is now contemplating legal action against the school district.
