Investigation into Florida Teacher’s Use of “Mx.”

A teacher at Talbot Elementary School in Gainesville, Florida, is under scrutiny for allegedly compelling students and staff to address her as “Mx.” instead of the traditional titles. This practice reportedly goes against state law, which mandates the use of titles that correspond to a person’s gender at birth.

Florida’s Attorney General, James Usmeyer, stated on Wednesday that the teacher’s actions are in violation of both state law and the policies of the Alachua County School District. He has called for prompt action to address the situation. A letter was sent to Alachua County Superintendent Camera Patton and the school board on October 22, urging them to enforce the law and consider possible disciplinary measures.

Currently, the teacher has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is underway, as confirmed by county spokeswoman Jackie Johnson. Furthermore, Florida Statute 1000.071, enacted in July 2023, prohibits K-12 personnel from using pronouns or titles that do not align with an individual’s assigned gender at birth. This statute was part of a legislative effort that also mandates sex education programs to teach that biological sex is “binary” and “immutable.”

Usmeyer warned that district officials could face accountability if they fail to act swiftly. His Office of Parental Rights had previously received a complaint regarding the teacher’s use of gender-neutral titles, prompting the investigation.

This incident represents a growing trend of heightened state oversight within Alachua County schools. Earlier this year, the Florida Department of Education determined that the school board violated parents’ free speech rights and is currently monitoring school board meetings until the year’s end.
