Florida Unveils Hurricane Strategy to Challenge Critics of Alligator Alcatraz

Florida’s Hurricane Plan for Wannial Cutras Amid Criticism

Florida has unveiled its hurricane plan for the Wannial Cutras facility, a controversial processing center for illegal immigration in the Everglades, which has faced accusations of inhumane conditions.

Despite enduring criticism for some time, Florida officials are still providing details about the facility’s structure and the kinds of immigrants it processes. Before its official opening this month, Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie noted that the air-conditioned center features highly rated aluminum construction.

Guthrie pointed out, “For anyone who doubts our preparedness, this facility is built with an aluminum frame capable of withstanding winds up to 110 mph, which falls under a high-end Category 2 hurricane. After all, this is Florida.”

He further stated, “The power supply is entirely redundant, equipped with a backup generator.”

Moreover, the facility promises to provide three meals daily, round-the-clock medical care, access to both indoor and outdoor recreational yards, as well as legal and spiritual support services and laundry facilities.

However, critics maintain that holding immigrants with serious criminal backgrounds—some linked to violent crimes—renders such a facility inappropriate. The Miami Herald has joined the critics, alleging a lack of a formal hurricane plan for Wannial Cutras. In response, Guthrie quickly addressed these claims.

According to Florida’s voice, documents detailing “Continuity of Operational Planning for South Florida Detention Facilities” emphasize the need for comprehensive evacuation and relocation protocols in the event of tropical cyclones, applicable to various emergency situations.

This plan outlines necessary actions and considerations, aimed at ensuring the safety and ongoing operations of the facility during crises. It includes information on alternative locations for relocating migrants in the event of a storm.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has criticized the media for spreading what he describes as false narratives regarding the facility, indicating they can be easily disproven. He has been dismissive of critics, often pointing to the more ridiculous statements made against the facility.

DeSantis remarked, “First of all, everyone is fed the same way, including staff. It’s not a prison; it’s a deportation processing center. Do you seriously think inmates get the same meals as guards in Florida? Of course not!”

He concluded, “Everyone receives the same treatment here.”

This facility, which has already processed numerous deportations, is known for detaining some of the most dangerous immigrants, including members of MS-13.
