Charges Against Florida Woman for Alleged Assault
A woman from Florida is facing several charges after reportedly attacking a 72-year-old man who was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat earlier this week. Laura Garrett, 33, was arrested on Tuesday at the Largo Police Station for obstructing or resisting police, as well as battery against someone over 65, according to Pinellas County Jail records.
Garrett allegedly approached the victim in a park and engaged him in a confrontation, during which she poured a drink on him from a can, striking him on the head and shoulder area. While she later denied the claim of hitting him, the situation escalated, prompting police intervention.
The conflict began when the two were involved in an argument. Garrett has since stated that she questioned the man about his support for former President Donald Trump. After the attack, she reportedly jumped a fence to escape the scene before officers caught up with her.
In the course of the arrest, Garrett allegedly resisted police and, according to the arrest report, attempted to wrap her legs around one officer, causing him to fall. The altercation resulted in injuries for the officer’s knee, which led to more charges against Garrett for battery.
After being booked at Pinellas County Jail on Tuesday, Garrett was released the following evening, as indicated by jail records. The incident, while troubling, highlights the increasingly volatile nature of public discourse surrounding political affiliations.
