The First Flying Humanoid Robot Sparks Mixed Reactions Online

There’s a buzz on the internet around a new humanoid robot that can fly—an adolescent-like creation called IronCub Mk3. The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) recently released a video showcasing its advancements, but what seems to have caught everyone’s eye is its unusual face.

One viewer questioned, “Why does it look so fuzzy?” while another noted, “This is impressive, but what’s with that face?” The sentiments continued, as a redditor wondered aloud, “The technology is amazing, but why does it look like a strange baby?”

Some commenters who stumbled upon this flying creation, perhaps not entirely sold on its design, came up with some interesting theories. “When an uprising happens, a cyborg with a baby’s face might get a pass,” joked one user, suggesting it might invoke hesitation in potential attackers.

You can relax, though. This robot isn’t ran by AI—it’s controlled remotely by operators. The team behind it is deeply invested in humanoid robotics, with five different models currently being developed at IIT.

The IronCub Mk3 is the product of two years of research and weighs 154 pounds, standing about 3 feet tall, equipped with a jetpack. IIT has designed it for specific applications, particularly in disaster response scenarios, believing that flying capabilities could enhance the effectiveness of rescue operations.

As Daniele Pucci, one of the researchers, pointed out, “This work marks a significant leap in modern robotics.” While many online expressed confusion over its slightly creepy childlike features, some argue that these humanoid traits serve practical functions.

With functional legs, the robot can navigate terrain, and its hands can interact with various objects. Currently, jet thrusters are in place of its arms, but plans are in motion to develop operational upper limbs.

Outdoor testing has already occurred in various conditions, and wind tunnel experiments are also underway.
