Dr. James C. Dobson Passes Away at 89
Dr. James C. Dobson, a bestselling author and well-known Christian psychologist, has died at the age of 89. He was the founder of Focus on the Family, a prominent faith-based organization founded in 1977. Gary Bauer, Senior Vice President of Public Policy at the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute, described him as a “pioneer” whose strong convictions influenced how many view faith, family, and culture today.
Bauer reflected on Dobson’s impact, saying, “His bold leadership, integrity, and compassion helped countless families to flourish. The values of the world shifted during his time. He was a mentor and a stable voice of truth during this turbulent period.”
Born in 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dobson’s work extended far beyond his radio broadcasts, which have reached over 4,000 stations and been translated into 27 languages worldwide. In 2010, he founded the Dr. James Dobson Family Research Institute after focusing on family issues. His popular show, Family Talk, is now broadcast on more than 1,500 radio outlets, with an estimated weekly audience of over 500,000.
Throughout his life, Dobson authored over 70 books, with some of his most notable titles including *Dare to Discipline*, *The New Strong-Willed Child*, *Raising a Boy*, and *Raising a Girl*. Aside from his writing, he played advisory roles for five U.S. presidents, significantly contributing to committees under Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, as well as being a member of Donald Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Committee. His influence also shaped public policy discussions on various social issues.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, his children Danae and Ryan, daughter-in-law Laura, and two grandchildren.
