US Issues Security Alerts After India’s Operation Sindoor
Following India’s Operation Sindoor, the United States issued security alerts for its citizens, specifically aimed at the aftermath of strikes targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). This action came after India’s pre-dawn operation against nine launchpads reportedly operated by Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.
The US embassy in Pakistan is advising Americans to steer clear of conflict zones, particularly in areas near the Indian-Pakistan border and the Line of Control (LOC). Due to ongoing terrorism and armed conflict risks, this region is under a “don’t travel” advisory from the US State Department, while the remainder of Pakistan is marked as “rethinking travel.”
In a statement released on Wednesday, the embassy acknowledged India’s military actions and noted that the situation is evolving and being closely monitored.
Recommendations for US Citizens in Pakistan
- If you are safe, vacate the area of active conflict or military operations.
- If evacuation isn’t feasible, seek shelter indoors.
- Stay alert, have identification handy, and try not to draw attention.
- Register with the Smart Traveler Registration Program (STEP) for updates from the US Embassy.
- Follow local news to ensure your safety measures are up to date.
The embassy urged Pakistani Americans to exercise caution, especially amid escalating tensions stemming from India’s preemptive military initiative targeting what it identified as “terror infrastructure” across the border.
US Security Reports on Pakistan
According to the latest security assessments, particular areas in Pakistan are deemed extremely hazardous. The reports advise against travel to Balochistan, where terrorist groups and separatists carry out lethal attacks against civilians, religious minorities, and security forces.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which includes the former federally administered tribal areas (FATA), is also categorized as very unsafe. In this region, terrorist and rebel groups frequently target civilians, NGOs, and government officials, often employing ambushes and assassinations. Polio workers and police personnel are particularly at risk.
Regarding crime, Islamabad is highlighted as a region of concern for US interests, while cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar are viewed as high-risk areas.
In emergencies, Pakistan’s crime helpline number is 15.
Overview of Operation Sindoor
During Operation Sindoor, which commenced early Wednesday morning, approximately 70 terrorists were reportedly killed in 24 missile strikes targeting a base believed to be planning a cross-border attack. Indian intelligence sources revealed that all targets were located beyond the Line of Control (LOC), including strategic locations adjacent to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) and Pakistan itself.
