Vance Criticizes Israeli Annexation Vote
On Thursday, Vice President J.D. Vance expressed disappointment over Israel’s decision to vote in favor of annexing the West Bank. He described feeling “insulted” by the Knesset’s actions, noting that the move could jeopardize the peace deal between the Trump administration and Gaza.
Vance recounted a conversation in which someone dismissed the vote as a “political stunt” that had no real implications. He responded, saying, “If it was a political stunt, it was a very stupid political stunt. I personally feel a certain amount of contempt for it.” He emphasized that under the Trump administration’s policy, Israel will not annex the West Bank. While recognizing the Knesset’s right to vote symbolically, he made it clear that the administration was not pleased with the outcome.
During a session on Wednesday, two preliminary bills regarding the West Bank were discussed. One proposed the annexation of the entire region, while the other focused on one of its largest settlements. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed lawmakers not to cast their votes on the matter but did not actively block the proposals.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern about any actions that might threaten the peace process. “They’re a democracy; they have the right to vote, but we worry it could backfire, especially now… We’re cautious about anything that might destabilize what we’ve been working on,” he noted.
Both Israel and Hamas have agreed to the initial phase of the Trump administration’s peace plan, which involves the release of 20 Israeli hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops to a specified line.
