Trump Administration Ensures Release of Robert Gilman from Russia Without Exchange

There’s been a noticeable decrease in the wrongful detention of American citizens abroad, especially after a significant event where President Donald Trump facilitated the release of Marine veteran Robert Gilman from a Russian prison. Dan O’Shea, a former hostage negotiator, discussed this turning point in U.S. hostage diplomacy, emphasizing that Gilman’s return didn’t involve a prisoner swap.

On Wednesday, images emerged depicting Marine Corps veteran Robert Gilman as he returned to the U.S. after being released from Russian custody. Gilman, who had been apprehended in Voronezh, Russia, on January 17, 2022, was initially sentenced to ten years in prison. However, he was released on humanitarian grounds on Tuesday, after spending 1,666 days in incarceration. President Trump shared that Gilman would arrive at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., that evening and mentioned, “He had one request: a great cheeseburger when we land.”

“Our Marines are back on American soil,” tweeted Sebastian Gorka, a deputy presidential aide, shortly after the event. He even mentioned, “As promised by President Trump, Steve Witkoff brought us Robert Gilman cheeseburgers and milkshakes!”

U.S. Marine Veteran Released from Russian Prison After 1,666 Days

Gorka humorously added, “(I sneaked him a cigar in case he fully recovers!)” and noted that members of the White House team gifted Gilman his own U.S. Marine Corps flag, asserting that “No American is left behind.”

Witkoff, serving as the U.S. special envoy for the Middle East, mentioned it was “a special night to welcome Americans back to their families and homeland.” He expressed gratitude to the president for his dedication to ensuring that no one is left behind.

“Robert is a patriot and former U.S. Marine who served our country honorably. Now, he can finally return home to his family and get the medical care he needs,” Witkoff stated in another post, reflecting on Trump’s leadership and commitment to bringing Americans back home. Gilman is not the only recent case; Mark Vogel and Ksenia Karelina were also brought from Russia during Trump’s administration.

American Ex-Marine Feared for His Life After Weeks in Russian Prison

Gilman had faced legal struggles in Russia, having been sentenced initially in 2022 for assaulting a police officer. This sentence was extended multiple times due to additional incidents, including assaults on prison staff. Despite these charges, the U.S. State Department labeled him an illegal detainee.

He is notably the third U.S. Marine captured in Russia over the last decade, joining Paul Whelan and Trevor Reed, both of whom were released in previous exchanges.

On Truth Social, Trump remarked that, “After consultation with President Vladimir Putin, Russia agreed to release Robert on humanitarian grounds. We appreciate this decision and the fact that Russia did not demand anything in return.”

Gilman Reunited with Family Post-Release

“Robert Gilman has been reunited with his wonderful mother, Nancy, who was also on the flight, and will soon be reunited with all of his loved ones,” Trump concluded.
