Recent footage from a police body camera revealed the altercation involving Tanner Horner, the former FedEx driver who has admitted guilt in the murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand. This exchange unfolded in a Texas courtroom where jurors are deliberating his potential sentence, which could range from the death penalty to life without parole.
Horner, now 34, confessed to the kidnapping and murder of Athena, with the incident taking place on November 30, 2022. As jurors reviewed the footage, they witnessed the interrogation process, including moments when officers asked Horner about the disposal of Athena’s clothes.
One notable exchange had an officer questioning, “You mean you stripped her naked and threw her clothes out the window on the freeway?” to which Horner’s response was unsettlingly detached, suggesting he found it, in his words, “interesting.”
The officers also engaged with Horner’s self-referred alter ego, “Zero.” When queried about whether Athena was wearing a jacket during the abduction, Horner, in the guise of Zero, replied that he had neither jacket nor shoes.
As the interrogation progressed, authorities sought clarification on whether Athena resisted getting into the truck. Horner seemed evasive, saying she did not try to fight back but muttered what she allegedly said to him. At times, he drifted into a different persona while conversing with the police.
Testimonies have also pointed out contradictions in Horner’s narrative, particularly regarding what he claimed happened post-abduction. Notably, he alleged that Athena’s underwear remained on her, yet investigators confirmed that she was found without any clothing.
Further into the investigation, Horner reportedly confessed to having placed Athena’s clothing in a backpack and disposing of it at her home. Investigators later discovered fragments of her attire in his possession. Espinoza, the lead investigator, challenged Horner’s various claims, stating they were untrue based on the evidence they collected.
In a video presented to jurors, Horner implored authorities to release him temporarily so he could celebrate Christmas with his family while promising more information about the crime in return. During an emotional confession, he acknowledged the wrongness of his actions, showcasing what many interpreted as signs of remorse.
Initially, Horner portrayed the situation as an accident, claiming he accidentally hit Athena with his truck. However, as the details emerged, he recounted the more violent elements of the crime, admitting to abduction and strangulation.
Here, prosecutors are attempting to depict Horner as a calculated individual, detailing the extent of his actions—from how he approached Athena to potential allegations of further assault. Evidence has also surfaced linking him to a camera he allegedly hid in his truck, which he might have used to record the events.
While Horner has pleaded guilty and accepted some responsibility, his defense is pushing for a lighter sentence, arguing his mental health issues, including brain damage and autism, should be taken into consideration. The case remains under scrutiny as indications suggest he was delivering a package to Athena’s home, specifically a Christmas gift, at the time of the tragic incident.
