Football coach criticizes referees and staff after playoff defeat

Controversy Surrounds Arizona Rattlers’ Season-Ending Loss

On Monday night, Kevin Guy, head coach of the Arizona Rattlers, expressed his frustration following what he termed an unfair conclusion to their season. The Rattlers, defending champions, suffered a narrow defeat against the San Diego Strike Force, ending the game at 49-48. With just 13 seconds left on the clock, the Strike Force managed to score a last-minute touchdown, which was facilitated by a 3-yard pass from Nate Davis.

However, Coach Guy argued that the real issue lay with the officiating. He believed that San Diego should have been penalized for a false start, along with a subsequent 10-second runoff, which he felt could have altered the game’s outcome.

Frustration boiled over as he criticized both the officials and his own staff, stating, “Our operation was the Bulls. The people on the clock and the replay? Well, they won’t be working with me again.” His remarks underscored a deep dissatisfaction with how the game was managed, especially concerning the referee’s oversight.

Guy didn’t hold back in his post-game comments. He recounted a touchdown the Rattlers scored just before halftime that was called back, saying, “What do you know? I’ve been complaining all year about how these defensive backs are wrapping around our receivers.” He emphasized that, unlike college football, the rules in this league prevent defenders from making contact after five yards, a point he felt was continuously ignored.

He concluded with a strong statement, indicating that he didn’t want those officials to return to his stadium, saying, “They don’t know the damn difference. It was a dog and pony show. I can tell you, those guys, they’re not welcome here again.” Despite the obstacles, Guy noted that he regularly brought in a reliable crew from the East Coast, underscoring a belief that the Arizona team’s officiating was unjustly criticized.

In light of the controversial ending, Guy has officially submitted a protest to the league regarding the game, leaving his defending champions to watch from home as the playoffs unfold.
