Despite the sizzling temperatures and ongoing weekend pool parties, fall is just around the corner, bringing with it the start of college football season.
Fall has earned a reputation—some might even call it infamous—as a prime wedding season, and it’s not hard to see why. The weather is usually pleasant, the trees boast beautiful colors, and the sun shines just right for those picture-perfect moments.
However, for college football enthusiasts, fall weddings can be a major annoyance. There’s this ongoing struggle between weekend wedding commitments and the desire to catch the games, a dilemma that’s faced campus fans ever since the sport began.
Honestly, I’ve always felt this way, and many college football supporters share the sentiment. Yet, I’ve noticed some fans beginning to take a stand against the idea of avoiding fall weddings. They even label it a gimmick and suggest fans just need to “grow up.”
I want to stress to those casual observers and nonchalant fans that this isn’t just a minor inconvenience—it’s part of who we are. Seriously, college football holds a significant place in my heart. In fact, when my wife and I tied the knot, we intentionally chose August for our wedding to avoid conflict with the football season.
I’m not trying to say you shouldn’t have a wedding in the fall; I’m just making it clear that if you do, I might not show up.
Even if I did attend, it wouldn’t be by choice. I remember being roped into a Saturday wedding back in October 2021. My wife wanted to go, but I was a miserable mess since Florida was losing to Kentucky during the reception. It was not a highlight of my life, definitely not while doing the electric slide.
And for those telling college football fans to “grow up,” well, can’t prioritizing your time be seen as pretty mature?
For me, Saturdays in the fall are sacred. I can handle any other social obligation, but those autumn Saturdays belong to football.
If you want to get married in the fall, go for it, but just know some of us may be tempted to skip out, especially if a big game, like Notre Dame versus Miami, is happening that weekend.
And be ready for us to send a gift from the registry. Oh, and we’ll make sure to have some extra hors d’oeuvres in our honor!
