For the first time ever, internet activity by AI and bots surpasses that of humans: 'We are now on the other side'

Online Activity: AI Surpasses Human Traffic

The machine is up and running.

For the very first time, online activity generated by artificial intelligence and automated bots has outstripped that of humans. Currently, more than half of all internet traffic originates from automated systems instead of actual users.

Recent data from Cloudflare indicates that as of May, a staggering 57.4% of web activity was attributed to AI agents and bots, while only 42.7% came from human interactions.

These automated systems often interact among themselves, crawling the web to answer queries via platforms like ChatGPT, gathering personal information, and even handling simple tasks—like autofilling search engine queries.

Interestingly, the surge in the use of AI by humans seems to have triggered a significant increase in traffic generated by these platforms, which is projected to grow by 187% in 2025, based on findings from the cybersecurity organization Human Security.

Additionally, the traffic from AI programs serving human users skyrocketed by around 8,000% last year, as reported by CNBC.

The implications of this shift for everyday users remain somewhat uncertain. However, Stu Solomon, the CEO of Human Security, believes there’s no cause for alarm regarding an impending AI takeover.

“This idea that machines are bad and humans are good is not quite true,” Solomon mentioned in an interview with CNBC.

He emphasized the need to coexist with machines that operate in our favor, highlighting the importance of establishing lasting trust.

In the meantime, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince has raised concerns about the potential vulnerability of the internet’s ad-based business model. He pointed out that “bots don’t click on ads,” suggesting that this could pave the way for users to be charged for access to their data, thereby regaining control over their privacy.

“We might be on the brink of a golden age of the internet,” Prince stated, suggesting this could lead to a positive transformation, and expressing hope that they can help facilitate this change.

It’s still ambiguous when the shift to a majority of automated traffic occurred, but Prince believes it likely happened within the last few months. He remarked on social media that we are “clearly on the other side now.”

Experts had anticipated that AI systems would eventually surpass human traffic online, but the fast-paced growth has caught even them off guard.

As Prince noted, “It happened sooner than expected. We thought it would be late 2027 or early 2028, but the growth has been so rapid that we are now witnessing bots surpass human traffic for the very first time in internet history.”
