Ford Motor Co. is implementing plans to scale back production of the F-150 Lightning, an all-electric pickup truck that President Joe Biden once touted.
On Friday, Ford executives announced Approximately 1,400 automotive employees at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, will be transferred to other company manufacturing operations or offered a retirement plan.
The job cuts come as Ford scales back production of the all-electric F-150 Lightning due to lack of demand from U.S. consumers.
In December, Ford executives told suppliers they planned to produce only about 1,600 F-150 Lightnings per week at the Rouge facility. This represents a 50 per cent cut from the promised target of producing 3,200 aircraft per week.
In May 2021, Biden met with Ford executives to promote the F-150 Lightning as part of his administration's green energy policy for the U.S. economy.
“This duck is fast,” Biden said while driving his pickup truck. Asked if he would buy the truck, Biden said, “I would,” before touting the truck's speed capabilities.
At the same time, Ford executives said they are hiring about 900 autoworkers to produce conventional gasoline-powered vehicles in Michigan, indicating higher demand for gasoline-powered vehicles compared to electric vehicles (EVs). Ta.
Ford's EV production cuts are yet another problem for the Biden administration, which is working alongside an EV mandate to push cars onto American consumers and automakers.
However, the latest research from Rasmussen Reports shows that 65% of American adults say they are unlikely to consider purchasing an EV for their next car purchase; It turned out that this included 37% who answered “not at all”. Fewer than 3 in 10 Americans said they would consider buying an EV.
A Consumer Reports study conducted in late 2023 found that EVs have nearly 80% more problems than gasoline-powered cars that use traditional internal combustion engines.
