Ford Delays Production at Electric Vehicle Plant, Cancels All-Electric SUV

Ford Motor Co. has delayed production of an all-electric pickup truck at its electric vehicle (EV) factory in Stanton, Tennessee, and canceled plans to build an all-electric SUV.

On Wednesday, Ford executives announced they were putting the brakes on investing in EVs.

“…the percentage of Ford’s annual capital spending for pure electric vehicles will decrease from approximately 40 percent to 30 percent,” it said. Detroit News Reports:

Ford plans to launch two all-electric pickup trucks in 2027: a mid-size truck built on a platform designed by its Skunk Works team in California, and a next-generation F-Series truck built at its new Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center. The company hasn’t said where the mid-size pickup will be built. The launch of the full-size truck, codenamed “Project T3,” which was scheduled for late 2027, has been delayed by 18 months. Additionally, Ford has canceled plans to release its upcoming three-row SUV as an EV, instead releasing it as a hybrid.Ford declined to say when or where it would go on sale. It was originally scheduled to go on sale at the company’s Oakville Assembly Plant in Ontario, but Ford opted to expand production of Super Duty trucks there instead. [Emphasis added]

Ford’s planned production of all-electric trucks at its Staunton plant will be delayed, but the plant will Produce The company plans to produce cells for the all-electric vans by the end of next year at its Staunton facility, known as Blue Oval City, which is currently under construction.

Ford, like other automakers, is gradually moving away from an all-EV strategy.

A leaked planning memo from a Ford executive last December said the company would build only about 1,600 F-150 Lightning trucks per week at its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Mich. Ford had originally planned to build about 3,200 F-150 Lightning trucks per week at the plant.
