Fordham Law graduate suffers cardiac arrest during NY bar exam while the test proceeds.

Medical Emergency During Bar Exam at Hofstra University

The bar exam must go on, right?

During the exam held on Wednesday, a Fordham law student collapsed from cardiac distress, leaving other candidates in shock. It was a harrowing moment, to say the least.

Despite the emergency, officials decided to continue with the second day of the New York State bar exam as safety personnel attempted to revive the unnamed woman at Hofstra University’s sports complex in Hempstead, Long Island. ABC 7 reported on the situation, with some students speaking out.

“It’s surreal to see someone in that condition and still be expected to concentrate on the exam,” one student shared with the newspaper.

The distressing episode unfolded just before the lunch break when a woman suddenly fell from her chair, collapsing in the convention center, according to a Hofstra spokesperson.

Public safety officers jumped into action, administering CPR and other life-saving measures until paramedics arrived to transport her to a local hospital. Her condition wasn’t immediately available.

After the lunch break, everything appeared to be back to normal, although the impact of the event lingered in the minds of those present.

“It’s hard to just push something like that out of your head,” mentioned another Fordham student to Newsday.

However, representatives from the state law board defended their response, stating, “The situation arose just moments before the end of the exam session. Our staff acted promptly once they were informed.”

Another student expressed discomfort with the lack of urgency shown by staff. “People around her were asking for help, but the superintendent just told us to keep going,” Isaac recounted. “It felt wrong.”

According to reports, some students were visibly shaken and moved seats to assist those providing aid. Communication with the state board for a comment went unanswered on Friday.

To practice law in New York, passing the bar exam is mandatory.

Following the incident, Nicole Lefton, a Hofstra Law School instructor and bar exam preparation director, acknowledged the emotional turmoil the students might feel. “We understand that witnessing this can be distressing,” she conveyed in Newsday. “We can’t disclose any medical details, but we recognize its possible impact on you.”
