Camp Mystic’s Director Dies While Trying to Save Campers in Texas Floods
On July 4, 2025, a flash flood struck the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, Texas, causing serious damage to Camp Mystic, a longstanding Christian girls’ summer camp.
Dick Eastland, the camp’s director and co-owner for many years, lost his life while attempting to rescue campers as the floodwaters surged through the camp before dawn.
Having led Camp Mystic since the 1970s, Eastland is fondly remembered by both former campers and staff as a father figure. His last moments, they say, echoed his lifelong commitment to protecting the campers.
“It’s no surprise that his last act of kindness helped save lives,” shared Paige Sumner, a former camper and friend.
At the time of the flood, over 700 campers and counselors were present. Tragically, 27 lives were lost as waters rose dramatically—from 14 feet to over 80 feet in just an hour—before the camp could fully evacuate.
This catastrophic flooding claimed at least 136 lives throughout Central Texas and sparked a critical discussion around emergency preparedness and warning systems. Local leaders paid tribute to Eastland’s bravery, calling his actions a symbol of heroism during this deadly natural disaster.

“U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Petty Officer Scott Raskin directly assisted an incredible 165 victims during the flooding,” tweeted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. This was Raskin’s first rescue operation, and his selfless actions truly embodied the spirit of the Coast Guard.

Chase Childers, 38, dove into the water near Pawleys Island on July 13, 2025, after reports emerged of people in danger. While others were able to make it back to shore, Childers got caught in the rip current and sadly could not return.
“The victim, Chase Childers, went into the water to help,” the Pawleys Island Police stated. “Unfortunately, he was also caught in the current and died trying to save others.”
Emergency responders, aided by Midway Fire Rescue and the Coast Guard, found Childers’ body around 90 minutes after the initial report. Many praised his bravery and expressed condolences to his family.
A GoFundMe page in his memory highlighted his role as a devoted husband and father, showcasing his extraordinary courage. Childers had previously received accolades for saving lives throughout his law enforcement career in Cobb County, Georgia.

Father Jumps into Sea to Save Daughter After She Falls from Disney Cruise
A dramatic rescue unfolded on the Disney Dream Cruise ship when a 5-year-old girl accidentally fell overboard between the Bahamas and Florida.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, this incident happened around 11:30 a.m. on June 29, 2025, as the little girl lost her balance and tipped overboard. Her father, alerted by her mother, leaped into the water and managed to rescue her.
Investigators noted that the crew quickly reacted to the alarm and initiated the emergency response, allowing the father and daughter to stay afloat until help arrived. The entire ordeal took about 20 minutes.
Surveillance footage supported the family’s account, and officials credited the ship’s crew for their effective training during the crisis. “The crew acted promptly and successfully rescued the passengers from the water,” a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson stated.
After being assessed by medical staff, the family—who requested privacy—considered the rescue outcome a major relief amidst a potential tragedy.
