Free agent safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. was suspended six games by the NFL on Tuesday for violating performance-enhancing substances rules. By ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Gipson, 33, spent the past two seasons with the 49ers and became the team’s starting free safety early into the 2022 season.
The Wyoming native was something of an iron man during his two seasons in the Bay Area, starting 34 of the 49ers’ 35 regular season games and all six of their playoff games.
In 2023, Gipson recorded one interception and one sack in 16 games.
Prior to coming to San Francisco, Gipson spent four years with the Browns, three with the Jaguars, one with the Texans and two with the Bears after joining as an undrafted free agent in 2012.
Gibson was selected to his only Pro Bowl in 2014 while with the Browns.
Gipson is signed with the team and remains eligible to participate in training camp and the preseason, but his six-game suspension will take effect starting with Week 1.

He’s not the only former 49ers player who will start this season on the bench due to a PED violation.
Jimmy Garoppolo was suspended two games in February for violating league rules.
Garoppolo, who signed a one-year contract with the Rams, claimed his positive test was the result of a mistake he made while applying for a therapeutic use exemption for an unspecified substance.
