Former College Football Player Accused of Massive Fraud

A former college football athlete is in hot water for allegedly pretending to be a professional NFL player in order to swindle nearly $20 million.

Luther Davis, who was part of the 2009 national championship team at the University of Alabama, now faces charges for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

According to court documents, Davis reportedly used wigs and makeup to impersonate players like Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix, free agent tight end David Njoku, and Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney, all of whom also have ties to Alabama.

From May 2023 to October 2024, Davis and his accomplice, CJ Evins, allegedly carried out a scheme to fraudulently secure millions in loans from various lenders. They claimed to be football players in need of financial assistance.

As part of their disguise, they set up fake bank accounts and email addresses, even managing to obtain forged identification documents.

The duo reportedly secured over $4 million in loans by impersonating Njoku and McKinney. Court documents suggest that the lenders were unaware that the real players were not present at the loan closings. Instead, Davis tricked notaries into believing he was one of the players by using false IDs.

Davis and Evins are expected to plead guilty at their upcoming hearing set for April 27. If found guilty, they could face up to 20 years in prison.

Davis had a notable career with the Crimson Tide, appearing in 45 games and making 47 tackles. Interestingly, he initially pledged to play for LSU before transferring to Alabama.
