Former AOC staffer suggests Mamdani should challenge Democrats opposing the agenda in primaries.

A former aide to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has remarked on the current state of the Democratic Party, expressing that there’s widespread “panic” over proposed $900 million taxes on billionaires and corporations. Corbin Trent, speaking to the Post, emphasized that Zoran Mamdani should rally supports behind major challengers targeting leftist lawmakers.

“I think Mamdani really needs to back these challengers. That’s his best leverage,” Trent asserted. He mentioned that there’s notable resistance already brewing, suggesting the political climate is charged.

He stressed that no Democratic incumbent should feel safe next year, arguing that even prominent figures like Hakeem Jeffries and Bronx Rep. Rich Torres could face challenges. “There’s always fear in politics. But there’s a line you don’t have to cross,” he said.

Trent, a co-founder of the Judicial Democrats, has a history with Ocasio-Cortez. He played a significant role in her campaign that replaced established politician Joe Crowley in 2018. He believes that incumbents aligned with traditional power structures are vulnerable, equating them to “sitting ducks.”

He suggested that political dynamics reflect similar patterns on the Republican side, where figures like former President Trump push back against members of their own party who stray from the party line.

Amidst these developments, tensions have surfaced within Mamdani’s leftist support base, which includes organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the Working Families Party (WFP). Some core Democratic figures may find themselves at risk from upstart challengers.

An aide for Jeffries, who is Black, noted that their campaign was prepared for what he characterized as a “gentlemen’s team.” Moreover, it has been reported that Jeffries and Mamdani are set to meet in person later this week.

In a contrasting remark, Torres claimed a position of strength in the current political landscape. He drew parallels between his strategy and that of the DSA, indicating that both sides were contemplating ways to counter Jeffries and reframe their approaches toward defeating Trump.

Toronto stated, “Unlike the rest of the city, former Governor Andrew Cuomo had substantial support here during the primary.” He mentioned that Trent has voiced concerns on his platform about Democrats inadvertently facilitating another Trump presidency.

Trent underscored a general disconnect he perceives among Democrats, saying they fail to understand the core issues driving voters. “It’s not about specific policies. They want someone who can fundamentally change the system,” he concluded.

He praised Mamdani’s efforts in the mayoral Democratic primary for promising significant shifts to address the ongoing affordable housing crisis. But there are doubts about whether such ambitions can be realistically pursued, as they hinge on legislative approval.
