Former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey backs Kari Lake, Trump despite past criticism

Former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) said Tuesday he will “put our differences aside” and vote for former President Trump and Republican Senate candidate Kali Lake (D-Arizona) in the November election, despite past tensions between the two.

“Much is at stake in this election year, and I urge every Arizona voter to get out and prioritize the issues that most affect our state and our nation,” Ducey said in a statement.

“I will be voting fully Republican in the November election and I support both Donald Trump and Kali Lake,” he added.

Ducey, who is due to leave office in 2023, cited border security, school choice, extending Trump-era tax cuts and inflation as issues that influenced his support.

Lake is set to face off against Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Arizona) in November, while Trump will face off against Vice President Harris.

Ducey has previously run against both candidates. He has endorsed Republican Karyn Taylor Robeson in the 2022 gubernatorial primary against Lake, with Lake saying:Misleading voters Lake repeatedly claimed the 2020 election was fraudulent, a claim he denied, saying there was “no evidence.” He ultimately lost the gubernatorial race to Democrat Katie Hobbs.

Meanwhile, President Trump has repeatedly pressured Governor Ducey over Arizona’s election results, which showed President Biden narrowly winning in the state after the 2020 election. The Washington Post reported that President Trump called Governor Ducey and urged him to gather votes to make up the difference in the votes in the state.

A Decision Desk HQ/The Hill average of polls in Arizona gives Trump a 1.3 percentage point lead over Harris, while in the Senate race, an average of polls gives Gallego a lead over Lake by about 6 percentage points.
