Former U.S. Senator Jon Kyl Passes Away at 84

Former U.S. Senator Jon Kyl, a prominent figure in Arizona’s political landscape, died on Thursday at the age of 84.

Kyl is survived by his wife Caryll, whom he met during his time at the University of Arizona, along with their two children. His family shared that he passed away due to complications from a neurological disease after a struggle with dementia.

Having announced his diagnosis and retirement from public life last December, Kyl spent his final moments surrounded by family. They reflected on his dedication to serving Arizona and the nation, highlighting how he viewed his congressional role as a serious obligation.

Kyl’s political journey lasted nearly thirty years. He began his career in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986, serving four terms before moving on to the U.S. Senate in 1994.

He was known for his strong work ethic and significant behind-the-scenes influence, eventually becoming the Senate Republican Whip in 2007, a position he held until his first retirement in 2013.

Throughout his career, Kyl was viewed as a “formidable legal mind and a master negotiator,” helping to shape important legislation on issues like national security, tax reform, judicial appointments, and water rights in the West, as noted by political analysts.

After leaving the Senate, Kyl continued to wield considerable influence in Washington. He played a critical role in guiding Brett Kavanaugh through his Senate confirmation process in 2018.

Losing longtime colleague Senator John McCain led to an appointment by then-Governor Doug Ducey to temporarily fill McCain’s Senate seat. Kyl served for about four months, during which he voted to confirm Kavanaugh before stepping down at the end of 2018.

Following news of his passing, tributes poured in from various political leaders. Colleagues remembered Kyl as a principled “workhorse” and a true statesman. Many highlighted his essential contributions to Arizona’s water security and his impactful leadership in Congress.
