Former Baltimore prosecutor Marilyn Mosby found guilty of 1 count of mortgage fraud

Former Baltimore City Attorney Marilyn Mosby was found guilty of one count of mortgage fraud after testifying that she unintentionally made false statements on loan applications to purchase two vacation homes in Florida.

The Associated Press reported that after the jury deliberated for most of the day, a split verdict was announced Tuesday night, acquitting Mosby of the second mortgage fraud charge.

Mosby was found guilty by a federal jury in November on two counts of perjury for falsely claiming to have suffered financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic in order to withdraw funds from the city’s retirement fund. received the verdict. She has not been sentenced in either case, and each charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Prosecutors argued at trial that Mosby lied about receiving a $5,000 gift from her husband at the time, which resulted in a lower interest rate.

The Baltimore Sun reported that the gift led to the conviction because prosecutors traced it back to her testimony.

To obtain a conviction, prosecutors needed to prove that Mr. Mosby knowingly made false statements that affected the mortgage application process.

Mosby was convicted of mortgage fraud and now faces up to 30 years in prison on the single charge.
